Where Does Mildew Appear?

Because ships are in such wet environments, there are quite a few different places where mildew can appear. Typically, you’ll see it on cloth or leather products, such as boat seats, boat covers, carpets, and rugs. Wood can also become form mildew after an extensive period of time. If you have a wooden boat or a wooden deck, you’ll need to keep an eye out for mold.

How to Avoid Mold

The best way to avoid mold on your boat’s fabrics and wooden parts is to keep them dry. However, this isn’t really feasible on a watercraft. Instead, try to allow your boat enough time to completely dry before placing your cover on it. You can also purchase sealants to better protect wood and leather materials on your ship. Finally, try to give your ship’s interior a good scrub every month or so to keep mildew from building up.

Removing Mildew

If you find that mildew has appeared on your boat you’ll want to act quickly. Grab a soft scrub brush or towel, a magic eraser, and a mild cleanser. You can purchase a mold remover for boats at your nearest store, or make your own with vinegar and water. You’ll also want to grab a sealant to apply on wooden items, or a protectant if you’re working with vinyl. To start, apply the cleanser and allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes before scrubbing with your brush. Continue this process until the mildew comes off completely. Afterward, apply the sealant or protectant once the material is dry. If you’re having trouble getting the stains off your boat’s leather, try replacing the brush with a magic eraser.
